Is DocuSign Down? How to Tell and What to Do

DocuSign is the signature layer for contracts, deal closings, HR onboarding, and compliance documents across thousands of organizations. When it degrades, envelopes don't deliver, signing ceremonies fail mid-flow, recipients see error pages instead of signature fields, and time-sensitive closings — end-of-quarter deals, employment offers, legal deadlines — hang in limbo.

The fastest way to know: Statusfield monitors DocuSign continuously and alerts you within minutes. Without monitoring, you find out about DocuSign outages when a signer calls asking why the link isn't working.

Common Signs of a DocuSign Outage

SymptomWhat's likely happening
"Unable to process your request" on signing pageSigning ceremony layer or document rendering is degraded
Envelopes sent but recipients report no emailEmail delivery pipeline is failing
Completed envelopes not showing in admin dashboardEnvelope processing or status update pipeline is lagging
DocuSign login page timing outAuthentication layer is degraded
Webhook notifications not arrivingEvent notification service is down
In-person signing sessions failing to launchIn-person workflow layer is degraded
Embedded signing iframe not loadingEmbedded signing API is failing
REST API returning 500 or 503 errorsDocuSign eSignature REST API is degraded

How to Confirm It's DocuSign, Not Your Configuration

Before escalating internally, rule out common non-platform causes:

1. Test a signing link in a private browser

Open the signing link in a private/incognito browser with no extensions. DocuSign signing pages can break if a browser extension interferes with JavaScript loading. If the signing page loads correctly in private browsing, the issue is a browser extension or cached session — not DocuSign.

2. Check whether the signer received the email

If a signer says they didn't receive the signing invitation, check your DocuSign Sent folder and confirm the envelope status. "Sent" in DocuSign means DocuSign has accepted the envelope for processing — it doesn't guarantee the email has been delivered to the recipient's inbox. If the envelope shows "Sent" but the recipient has no email, the issue could be recipient-side spam filtering or DocuSign's email delivery pipeline.

3. Distinguish API failures from UI failures

If you're using DocuSign via the REST API (embedded signing, automated workflows), test the eSignature endpoint directly. DocuSign's API and web application sometimes degrade independently — the web UI can be unavailable while API calls succeed, or vice versa.

4. Check account-level configuration

Envelopes that fail to send may have hit your account's envelope limit. DocuSign accounts on paid plans have a soft envelope cap — once reached, sends fail with a specific error. Check your account usage in Settings → Plan and Billing before assuming a platform outage.

The Problem With Vendor Status Pages

When DocuSign has a problem, the instinct is to check their status page. The issue: DocuSign's status page reflects what their operations team has diagnosed — typically 15–30 minutes after the incident begins.

When a deal closing is on the clock, a 30-minute gap is a serious problem. End-of-quarter closings, employment offers with deadlines, and legal documents with filing windows can't wait for a status page update.

Statusfield detects DocuSign degradations the moment they start — before the status page is updated, before your deal is at risk.

What to Do During a DocuSign Outage

Immediate (first 5 minutes)

  1. Confirm scope — test a signing link in a private browser and have a colleague confirm the same failure. Distinguish UI vs. API failures.
  2. Identify in-flight envelopes — list any envelopes that are currently "Sent" with time-sensitive deadlines. These are your highest priority to monitor.
  3. Check if resending works — if an envelope was sent but not received, try "Resend" from the DocuSign UI. During email delivery degradations, a resend may succeed if the issue has partially resolved.
  4. Alert deal owners — if you have contracts in flight with external parties, notify counterparties via email or phone that there's a temporary delay so they don't lose confidence in the process.

Communication (first 15 minutes)

  • Email or call signers directly to let them know the signing link is temporarily unavailable — this prevents them from assuming the request has been cancelled.
  • If you're on a legal deadline, consult with legal counsel on whether the deadline can be documented as attempted with a platform outage as force majeure.
  • Do not delete and recreate envelopes during an outage — if the original envelope processes after recovery, you may end up with duplicate signing requests.

Recovery

  • After DocuSign recovers, verify that all in-flight envelopes have reached their intended status (Sent → Delivered → Completed).
  • Resend any envelopes that were accepted by DocuSign during the outage but whose emails never delivered.
  • Check webhook logs — events that fired during the outage window may have failed to deliver to your endpoint and may need to be re-triggered or manually reconciled.

DocuSign Components and What Each Outage Looks Like

DocuSign has several independent subsystems that can fail separately:

ComponentImpact when degraded
Web application (app.docusign.com)Login, envelope creation, and admin UI unavailable
eSignature REST APIAutomated sends, embedded signing, and API integrations fail
Email deliverySigning invitations and completion notifications don't reach recipients
Signing ceremonyRecipients can open the signing link but can't complete or submit
Embedded signingSigning iframes in your product fail to load or authenticate
Webhook / event notificationsEnvelope status events don't push to your endpoint
Completed document storageEnvelopes complete but signed PDFs aren't accessible
SMS delivery (for SMS authentication)Identity verification via SMS fails during signing

An email delivery failure doesn't prevent signers from using an existing signing link. An embedded signing failure doesn't affect web-based signing flows.

Why DIY Monitoring Misses the Real DocuSign Failures

Pinging DocuSign's login URL tells you almost nothing about whether your signing pipeline is working:

  • Signing ceremony failures are invisible to availability checks — DocuSign's web application can be reachable while the document rendering engine fails on every signing attempt.
  • Email delivery failures don't surface as 5xx errors — DocuSign accepts the envelope and returns a success response, but the actual email never leaves their mail infrastructure.
  • Embedded signing auth failures appear as blank iframes — your product shows an empty frame instead of a signing page, with no error that a health check could detect.
  • Webhook delivery failures are silent — your endpoint stops receiving events, but DocuSign's API remains healthy. You only notice when your deal pipeline status goes stale.

Effective DocuSign monitoring checks the actual signing pipeline and webhook delivery — not just whether the login page responds. That's what Statusfield does.

FAQ

Is DocuSign down right now?

Statusfield monitors DocuSign continuously and will tell you before a time-sensitive signing request gets stuck. If envelopes aren't delivering or signing pages are returning errors, check Statusfield for real-time status.

Why are DocuSign envelopes not being received?

Check the envelope status in DocuSign — if it shows "Sent," DocuSign accepted it but the email may not have delivered. Ask recipients to check spam. If the issue affects multiple recipients across different domains, it's a DocuSign email delivery problem — check Statusfield.

How long do DocuSign outages last?

Most incidents resolve within 1 to 2 hours. Monitor Statusfield for real-time updates during an active incident.

How do I get alerted when DocuSign goes down?
