Last updateFrom `16:41Z` - `23:56Z` operations on and access to user uploaded images failed. This affected user ability to add new images to QR codes and Pages, and affected display of user uploaded images on Page buttons and backgrounds. The root cause was human error by our service provider during the application of a policy change. A restriction intended for one object incorrectly applied at the bucket level. We understand the significant impact this has had and we are taking steps with our service provider to prevent this from happening again.
The issue has been resolved, and all services appear to be operating as expected.

Our 3rd party provider has implemented a fix for the service disruption that was causing issues with using PayPal as a payment method in our checkout flow. PayPal payment methods should now be function in our checkout flow, but if you continue to encounter any issues, using credit card is still a viable workaround.

Last updateOn `2024-09-16` We experienced an outage affecting the Bitly Pages product from `19:03Z` to `21:11Z`. The root cause was an added dependency which impacted client-side rendering of Pages. This issue was not immediately detected by automated tests or monitors. From `20:27Z` to `21:11Z`, our oncall team activated a recovery system allowing Pages served on the `bit.ly` domain to recover. Some custom domains continued to see impact. The code change contributing to the outage was identified and rolled back allowing for full recovery of Page rendering. We have already taken steps in our automation to detect similar rendering problems before they can affect our customers. We apologize for the inconvenience this outage may have caused and understand the impact to our customers. We place a high value on the reliability of our services and are evaluating ways to improve our ability to mitigate this type of issue. We also understand the impact and potential confusion caused by the lack of messaging during this outage. We value highly and will work to improve our ability to communicate about incidents in a timely fashion.
The validation of the fix has completed. Bitly Pages are fully operational again.

Last updateOn `2024-08-14` We experienced an outage affecting the Bitly API from `15:03Z` to `15:10Z` and affecting the Bitly website from `15:03Z` to `15:31Z`. The root cause was a failure in our deployment pipeline which caused the incorrect release to be deployed. This change was immediately detected and rolled back but the failure triggered an unknown dependency loop which required a manual rollback to restore some systems. We have already taken steps to resolve some root causes and are evaluating ways to improve our ability to rollback more quickly in similar situations.

The root cause was a change to internal service load balancing health checks which prevented services from being updated during a deployment. Link redirects remained functional during the incident. Webhooks were delayed during the incident.

Last updateOn `2023-10-28` we experienced a DDoS attack against our platform. Our oncall team responded promptly and worked to mitigate impacts to our services. From `04:56 UTC` to `06:26 UTC` we experienced intermittent but significant impact to the Bitly website, Link-in-Bio pages, and redirects for custom domains with DNS A records. Some custom domains continued to see impact until `19:51 UTC` when we released additional updates to our mitigation strategy. The Bitly API and links on the bit.ly domain and custom domains with DNS CNAME records continued to work throughout this period. Additionally, during this incident our status page provider was conducting a maintenance window and experienced an outage of its own which affected our ability to communicate our investigation and response to this incident via status.bitly.com in a timely manner. At `05:55 UTC` we were able to update bitly.com with some details of our incident response. We apologize for the inconvenience this outage may have caused and understand the impact to our customers. We place a high value on the reliability of our services and are evaluating ways to improve our ability to mitigate this type of issue. We also understand the impact and potential confusion caused by the lack of messaging during this outage. Last updateAt `16:10 UTC` on April 25th Bitly's backup system protecting click and scan functionality automatically engaged and our on-call Engineering team was alerted to errors within our website and API including impact to the ability to create new links. By `16:28 UTC` we had identified the root cause as an issue affecting internal load balancing with our cloud hosting service provider \(details on this incident can be found on their [status page](https://status.cloud.google.com/incidents/gsr6HAk6oCUpNG4CAZ1H)\). Our Engineering team worked directly with the service provider and took necesary steps to restore service once the service provider mitigated the incident. Once the cloud load balancers were back online, access to our website and public API was quickly restored; by `17:31 UTC` our production systems were fully functional. We sincerely apologize to our customers who were impacted during this disruption.
