Report: "Monitoring Natural Event: Hurricane Florence"

Last update
resolved

Further monitoring of Hurricane Florence has been deemed no longer necessary due to it's downgraded status. The potential for risk has been significantly reduced and the Janrain Engineering team has returned to normal monitoring and alerting operations.

monitoring

Hurricane Florence has now been downgraded to a Category 2 Tropical Storm and the forecasted path has veered away from the US-East-1 region location in Virginia. Janrain teams are continuing to monitor this event closely but due to the downgraded status and the path, the potential for risk to Janrain and AWS hosted services has been significantly reduced.

monitoring

In light of the current predictions regarding Hurricane Florence making landfall this weekend on the east coast where AWS-East hosts Janrain’s US based infrastructure, Janrain is actively monitoring the situation and may elect to take further proactive measures if necessary. Please refer to AWS’s blog post below for more information on AWS preparations: https://aws.amazon.com/blogs/aws/aws-ready-for-the-next-storm/

Report: "Post Incident Notification: Traditional Login and Registration availability impact"

Last update
resolved

At 10:17 AM PDT / 1:17 PM EDT today the Akamai Identity Cloud suffered a significant availability impact for customer’s that run in the US East region. This impact lasted 79 min before it was fully mitigated at 11:36 AM PDT / 2:35 PM EDT. At this time it appears that the cause of the incident was a high rate of requests to several API endpoints in the affected regions. This appears to have been a “friendly fire” incident during which the source of the excessive traffic was an existing customer and not an adversary. Akamai is engaged with the customer in question to better understand this burst of abnormal API requests. In parallel we are preparing countermeasures to keep such an event from recurring.

Report: "DNS failure"

Last update
postmortem

July 27, 2021 A full RCA has been published that is available to you upon request of your Akamai sales team. This may be shared with your organization under NDA. Sincerely, Andrew Ward \(CISSP\) ‌ July 23, 2021 This service incident that impacted Akamai Identity Cloud \(AIC\) was a result of the global outage affecting DNS services on the Akamai Enhanced SSL \(ESSL\) network. The AIC solution relies upon the ESSL network and DNS for service delivery. At this time it appears a software change was implemented that incurred a defect in DNS. The software change was rolled back within an hour and the situation was fully mitigated. At this time the Akamai incident management team continues to investigate the matter. A Root Cause Analysis \(RCA\) can be expected in the future, but given the complexity and scale of the this event AIC customers should expect a week or longer may be needed for a RCA to be published by the incident management team. Sincerely, Andrew Ward \(CISSP\) Sr. Director Product Management Akamai Technologies, Inc.
